Dr Kenneth Ooi

Cataract Surgeon, Dry Eyes & Corneal, Ocular Surface Specialist

Dr Kenneth Ooi is a consultant comprehensive ophthalmologist and cataract, refractive and ocular surface surgeon with an interest in ocular inflammation including dry eye inflammatory states. He has completed his fellowship exam with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists through Prince of Wales Hospital and a Master of Surgery (Ophthalmology) with University College London and the University of Adelaide. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Save Sight Institute, Sydney Eye Hospital Campus, University of Sydney. He also holds a Conjoint Lecturer appointment at the School of Medical Sciences, UNSW.

He has completed a corneal clinical research fellowship at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Eye Hospitals and a uveitis clinical research fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology, London.

He has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Adelaide Annual Research Day Prize; Faculty of Health Sciences Divisional Scholarship, University of Adelaide; Fight for Sight Bursary, London; Save Sight Institute Grant, University of Sydney and nominated for the Troutman Cornea Prize for Young Clinician Investigators. In 2013 he was also nominated for the Best Early-Stage Innovation for the UNSW Innovation Awards and granted an international patent for a novel dry eye drop – Topical Atorvastatin for Blepharitis and Dry Eyes. He has contributed numerous publications and a book chapter to the literature.

He is a reviewer for a number of international journals and is on the Editorial Board for the journal Annals of Eye Science.

He is on Medical Advisory Boards for Seqirus and Novartis advocating for approval of new dry eye therapies into Australia through the TGA.

He provides medicolegal expert opinion advice for TMLEP ensuring clinical governance for both patients and doctors.

Dr. Ooi provides a refractive service with lens extraction surgery for cataracts and reduced reading ability. He also performs implantable contact lens surgery and laser vision correction for short and longsightedness, astigmatism and reduced reading vision, all with a focus on any dry eye concerns. Dr. Ooi also performs ocular surface surgery including pterygium and pinguecula excision and conjunctival autografting with glue and sutures. He also has experience with surgical and medical management of ocular surface cancers.

He is able to conduct consultations in Cantonese, French and German and is learning Mandarin.
